Christmas Bird Count

Now in its 116th year, the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count will take place from December 14 through January 5, with more than more 72,000 volunteers from 2,400-plus locations across the Western Hemisphere.

In over 35 locations in New Mexico, families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission to count birds - often before dawn in the freezing cold.

Christmas bird counts follow time-honored traditions in Kansas, bringing dedicated birders together to make new acquaintances, renew old friendships, and learn more about birds and birdwatching.

More kids are joining the Christmas Bird Count, a wildlife survey and citizen-science project that takes place worldwide in December or January. The Christmas/Winter Bird Count for Kids, aimed at youngsters age eight to 18, is offered on more and more national wildlife refuges.
