Hot off the presses last week, Birds of the Tropical Andes is a beautiful, large-format book that evokes a one of a kind photographic celebration of the diversity of South American birds, represented in images of more than 200 different bird species in this impressive volume. Following 7 years of immersive fieldwork in the heart of the Andes Mountains in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, the book also presents insights into the latest research and conservation work in the field with valuable first-person perspectives. Most of all, this new book showcases the wonder and incredible diversity of Andean birds found in unique tropical habitats.

Featuring dazzling photographs and written contributions from celebrated conservationists, Birds of the Tropical Andes was published July 8th by Princeton University Press. In their latest collaboration, Michael Parr, President of American Bird Conservancy (ABC), and renowned bird photographer Owen Deutsch invite you on a visually captivating journey that explores the Tropical Andes and shares favorite places to experience birding and bird photography at its best.

This new book features vivid bird photography as well as insights into the region’s habitats and the extraordinary birds that live there. “This book is designed to inspire people to visit the Tropical Andes, which have some of the greatest birding opportunities in the world, and also some of the most important bird conservation projects,” explained Michael Parr; while Owen Deutsch added “Both Michael and I have spent considerable time in the Andes independently, and we carried out 4 joint photographic expeditions to the region.”

Considered one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, the Tropical Andes are home to more than 1,700 bird species, with approximately 1/3 of them found nowhere else on Earth.

Spanning more than 4,300 miles across much of western South America, the Andes are the world’s longest continental mountain range and home to some of the world’s most magnificent birds, ranging from Sword-billed Hummingbirds to James’s Flamingos and Red-fronted Macaws.

Birds of the Tropical Andes will give you an appreciation of this expansive region of South America and its birds, and their unparalleled diversity and splendor are beautifully illustrated in this book by Owen Deutch.
