Saturday is Global Big Day!

How many Global Big Day reports will include a Pacific Golden Plover among the list of species sighted? Celebrate the birds around you!

It’s a great time of the year for birders as many of us celebrate by joining the excitement of the annual Global Big Day, the biggest day in birding, this Saturday, May 9. Celebrate the birds around you, wherever you are, and wherever you go Saturday by identifying and counting all the birds you see at each stop you make, including home, to participate in the Global Big Day. Last year birders from 173 countries recorded a grand total of 6,967 different species of birds!

Although not everyone may be able to leave home to go birding this year, the Global Big Day is still an opportunity to check in with the birds where you live, or locations you can safely visit.

Join the global birding community by reporting your Global Big Day bird lists with eBird – participating is simple, and your information is very important to add to the overall information collected. For all the information about how to participate in the Global Big Day, see https://ebird.org/news/global-big-day-9-may-2020

Birders in the United States provided information about 727 species last year, while Canadian birders reported 384 species to the eBird site, thereby providing a snapshot of the distribution of many of the birds across North America during one day in early May. Wherever you are, you can be part of the global community of birders this Saturday, May 9th. Even if you don’t place a report, you can check into the webpage to see how reporting is progressing around the globe. During the current pandemic period, please remember to always put safety first and follow local safety guidelines and closures; and keep your social distancing from other birders and non-birders alike. Wherever you enjoy birding Saturday, celebrate the birds around you!
