Fall’s Biggest Day of Birding – October 8th

October Big Day birders can find a Turquoise-browed Motmot if birding between the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and northern Costa Rica, but every bird counts on October 8th, including birds at your feeding station (photo by Paul Konrad).
Among the 7,238 different species of birds found last year was a Chocolate-vented Tyrant, a flycatcher found in southern Argentina and Chile, which was selected for this year’s promotional logo (photo by Pio Marshall).

This year’s October Big Day is just a month away – October 8th – the day birders unite across the world to provide a look at the distribution of birds during mid-fall migration. Big Days are a 24-hour opportunity to celebrate birds near and far, but you don’t need to be a marathoner, you can participate if you just have 15 minutes to spare, or if you have 15 hours to devote. Last October, birders from 195 countries reported 7,238 different species of birds during October Big Day 2021, demonstrating the power of birds to bring people together around the world. Can we count you in this year?

Wherever you are on October 8th, take a few minutes or a few hours to join the world of birding during October Big Day. Participate from anywhere – at your favorite fall birding location, a birding hotspot you always wanted to visit, or even from a window at home! Then share your sightings with eBird and check in to see what other birds are being reported worldwide.
