This year, ZEISS and the Cornell Lab will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Young Birder Event. From July 12-15, 2018, the Cornell Lab will host a group of teenagers (students who will be sophomores, juniors, and seniors) with a passion for birds. The event gives the young birders a chance to meet and learn from Cornell Lab employees including ornithological researchers, audio specialists, and computer scientists.
“Over the last 10 years, the Cornell Lab has hosted many young people interested in pursuing a career involving birds,” says Richard Moncrief, Birding and Nature Observation Segment Manager at Carl Zeiss SBE. “Past young birders have gone on to do amazing things and this year we hope to highlight the tremendous impact this program has had on their lives.”
- two days of field trip presentations by Cornell Lab staff including professors, researchers, and students who will share various ways to incorporate birds into a career
- eBird and field notes workshop
- sound recording workshop
- tour of the Cornell Lab including the Macaulay Library and Museum of Vertebrates
- dinner with Cornell Lab directors and staff
- each Young Birder will also receive a pair of ZEISS binoculars to take home
ZEISS will also continue to serve as the lead page sponsor of eBird, a real-time, online checklist program. eBird has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Zeiss,” says eBird project lead Chris Wood. “With ZEISS’s support of both eBird and the Young Birders Event, we are able to build and engage a birding community interested inadvancing bird conservation and scientific understanding.”
Part of the continued collaboration will be to recognize the ZEISS eBirder of the Month, each of whom is awarded the ZEISS 8x42 Conquest HD binocular for their contributions to eBird.
