A First State Record Wedge-tailed Shearwater was sighted and photographed during a Seabirding pelagic trip out of Hatteras, North Carolina. This sighting also provides only the Second Atlantic Ocean Record for this species, which is normally found in the South Pacific! (photos by Kate Sutherland).

Seven new state records were established by birders, with First State Record birds including a Wedge-tailed Shearwater offshore from Hatteras, North Carolina, which also represents only the second record for the Atlantic Ocean! The other First State Record last week was a Heermann’s Gull recorded in Massachusetts, a species normally found along the Pacific Coast. Two exciting Second State Records included a Zone-tailed Hawk sighted above a Florida Key, and a Royal Tern in Michigan – and there are many more exciting rare bird sightings to report below:
