During fall migration and through the colder months, you position the front panel so the entrance hole is near the bottom of the box, which allows warm air from the bird(s) to rise and remain inside the roosting box, thereby creating a warmer sheltered location for birds to spend nights or seek shelter during a storm. To permit birds to perch where the air is warmer (above the low entrance), there are 3 removable dowels inside because bluebirds sometimes roost together for added warmth, as do chickadees and titmice. But during the spring and summer nesting season you will want to remove the dowels and invert the front panel so the entrance hole is near the top of the box to be ready for cavity nesting birds like bluebirds, Tree Swallows, and others.

The 1½-inch diameter entrance hole is sized for bluebirds and similar-sized cavity nesting birds. The ¾-inch thick pine boards offer good insulation, and the down-sloped roof directs water away from the entrance and interior.
