For 43 years, Shearwater Journeys has provided California pelagic field trips for birders, mostly offshore from Monterey. But at the conclusion of the 2019 season, Debi Shearwater will retire, which will mark a remarkable career teaching and inspiring birders about seabirds and oceanscapes. An indication of the quality of Debi’s seabirding trips is reflected in her most recent pelagic trip’s species list for October 21 offshore from Monterey, which included 14 Black-footed Albatrosses, 1 Red-footed Booby, 19 Northern Fulmars, 2 South Polar Skuas, 7 Pomarine Jaegers, 3 Parasitic Jaegers, 80 Buller’s Shearwaters, 114 Sooty Shearwaters, 327 Pink-footed Shearwaters, 15 Black-vented Shearwaters, 1 Ashy Storm Petrel, 870 Rhinoceros Auklet, 49 Cassin’s Auklets, 1 Tufted Puffin, 335 Common Murres, and many more exciting pelagic birds. (Also 3 Blue Whales, 4 Humpback Whales, and 25 Rizzo’s Dolphins.)
