The Warblr app will make its U.S. debut in June 2017 following a successful 2015 U.K. launch. Warblr is to bird song what the popular Shazam app is to music. Simply record a bird's song with your IOS or Android phone, and Warblr uses its deep machine learning technology to identify the species of bird/s found in that recording and returns images and descriptions to help users learn about the bird they are hearing. With their recordings, Warblr users are also contributing to an ongoing citizen science project (30,000+ U.K. recordings so far) that is freely available to scientists for research and conservation, ultimately helping protect threatened and endangered bird species.

The Warblr team, in partnership with the Captain Planet Foundation (www.captainplanetfoundation.org) and Atlanta Audubon Society (www.atlantaaudubon.org), has launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (www.indiegogo.com/at/warblrGA) to raise $16,000 to offset the costs to establish the system and app for North American bird species. We're starting in Georgia and the Southeast, but hope to ultimately expand across the U.S. Campaign donors may receive an early release of the app to test, Warblr stickers, t-shirts, autographed books, tickets to the Foundation's annual Gala and more, depending on the amount they donate. Once launched, the app will be available for $5.99 from the iOS App Store and Google Play, with funds reinvested in the project.
We plan to make free downloads of Warblr app available to Georgia K-5 educators and their students in conjunction with free lessons developed by CPF and Atlanta Audubon Society. The system and app will be scaled regionally with support from other regional birding organizations by 2019.
Based on the animated TV series "Captain Planet and the Planeteers," CPF was co-founded in 1991 by media mogul Ted Turner and is a grant-making foundation that has funded more than 2,100 hands-on environmental education projects with schools and non-profits that serve children in all 50 U.S. states and in 25 countries. The school version of the app will include the characters from the original Captain Planet cartoon.
The mission of Atlanta Audubon Society is to protect Georgia's birds and their habitats through conservation, education, and advocacy.
