Richmond, Va. Osprey Cam on the James River

A new osprey cam offers an up-close-and-personal look at two local birds of prey and their nest on the James River.

The nest is located on a Richmond-Peterersburg bride piling between the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge and the Manchester Bridge.

The RVA Osprey Cam is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And it's in HD.

The camera project is from RichmondOutside.com and other sponsors including the James River Association, Riverside Outfitters and Terrain360.

According to the website, organizers had to haul hundreds of pounds of equipment -- including the camera, solar panels, batteries, cable and metal frames -- up the 40-foot railroad piling. And they had to secure a reliable internet connection. The camera offers 360-degree pan and 30x zoom functions.

While the camera may pan out on the river from time to time, the focus will be on the birds. The RVA Osprey Camera hopes to see the bird mate, lay eggs and eventually have babies.
