Wetlands Education Kits Provided to Saginaw Bay Teachers

Through a generous grant awarded by the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network, the Department of Natural Resources, as part of the Michigan Waterfowl Legacy, is offering free educational kits that focus on Michigan's wetlands and waterfowl in the Saginaw Bay Watershed.

Each kit contains six lesson plans, worksheets and a variety of materials to assist teachers with hands-on learning about wetlands and waterfowl, and specifically the Saginaw Bay Watershed.

In addition to learning more about their local wetland ecosystems, participating students will each get their own set of binoculars and duck identification guides to keep.

This place-based unit is for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms in Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Tuscola counties. Teachers interested in this opportunity should fill out a short application at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WH8QJZ8 or contact Hannah Schauer at 517-284-6218.

Teachers must express their interest by Dec. 1 in order to receive the kits to use during the spring of 2016. Kits will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

This unique learning experience provides the opportunity for students and teachers to connect with their local wetland and waterfowl managers and to learn about the resources available in their own backyard.

The Michigan Waterfowl Legacy is a 10-year, cooperative partnership to restore, conserve and celebrate Michigan's waterfowl, wetlands and waterfowl hunting community. Whether they duck hunt every year, sit on the back porch to watch the annual fall waterfowl migration, or get their drinking water from a groundwater stream purified by a wetlands, just about all Michigan residents – whether they know it or not – have a connection to our state's rich and diverse waterfowl and wetlands heritage.
