Lights Out Columbus Reaches 19 Participating Buildings

With the enrollment of 8 buildings managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, Lights Out Columbus has reached 19 participating buildings! That group includes 6 of the 15 tallest buildings in the city.

Lights Out Columbus educates building owners, managers, and residents about the risks of lighting and window strikes to migrating birds and encourages them to reduce these risks while also decreasing their energy expenditures. Lights Out Columbus works with enrolled buildings to adapt lighting to reduce dangers to nocturnally migrating birds, while maintaining the safety and beauty of the building.

AEP Corporate Headquarters

AEP's headquarters is a 31-story building in downtown Columbus. In addition to participating in Lights Out, the building also earned U.S. EPA's ENERGY STAR certification in 2010 and LEED Gold certification for Existing Buildings: Operation and Maintenance in 2011.

Columbus City Hall

This beautiful historic building in the heart of downtown Columbus was built in the 1930′s. In addition to participating in Ohio Lights Out, Columbus City Hall is currently undergoing renovations including new windows to improve energy efficiency.

Columbia Gas

This 15-story, 200 ft tall building was constructed in 1983 in the south-end of downtown Columbus.

Franklin County Common Pleas Courthouse (345 S. High St)

Opened in June 2011 and managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners, this the first LEED certified courthouse in the State of Ohio! The Courthouse has a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Green features at this building include rain gardens, a green roof, and an eco-lighting system.

Franklin County Correctional Center I (370 S. Front St)

Built in 1971, this 643 bed maximum security facility is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.

Franklin County Courthouse (373 S. High St)

This 27 floor, 464 ft building managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners is the 7th tallest in Columbus.

Franklin County Fulton Street Parking Garage (34 East Fulton St)

This 7-story parking structure is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.

Franklin County James A. Karnes Building (410 S. High St)

Built in 1950, this building is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and named in honor of former Franklin County Sheriff James A. Karnes.

Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center and Parking Garage (399 S. Front St)
This building is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and houses the Juvenile Detention Facility.

Franklin County Pavilion (365 S. High St.)

This building is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and is the main entrance to the Franklin County Government Center.

Franklin County Services Building (80 E. Fulton Street)

This building is managed by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners and houses the Child Support Enforcement Agency.

Grange Insurance

This newly-renovated building in Columbus' brewery district features a number of green building elements, including high-efficiency glass, an exterior sun shade system, automatically adjusting light fixtures and rooftop gardens.

Grange Insurance Audubon Center

As a founding partner of Lights Out Columbus, the Grange Insurance Audubon Center has been vital in the success of the program. In addition to participating in Lights Out, the Grange Insurance Audubon Center has a number of green features including geoexchange heat pumps, low-flow, low water usage plumbing, and building overhangs help control sunlight and reduce summer heat gain.

Huntington Center

This 37-story tower in the center of downtown Columbus was completed in 1984 and is the city's 4th tallest building. In addition to participating in Lights Out, the Huntington Center responsibly manages energy usage through automatic light timers and has been Energy Star certified since 1999.

One Columbus

This 25-story building in downtown Columbus was the first building to enroll in Lights Out Columbus. Besides recommending behaviors that reduce overhead and office consumption, building management offers a recycling program that provides guidance on the proper disposal of assorted waste, including electronics.

Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel

This 21-story hotel was the first hotel to enroll in the Lights Out program in Columbus. Hotel guests receive fliers when checking in during peak bird migration periods to learn about the program.

School Employees Retirement System of Ohio

The maintenance staff at this 137 ft, 10 story building in downtown Columbus has been taking steps to reduce energy consumption since 2007. These steps include adjusting internal temperatures, reducing exterior lighting in parking garage, and reducing the amount of lighting in meeting rooms. By taking these steps, SERS has reduced natural gas consumption by 35-40 percent and reduced electric usage by 15 percent at their building.

William Green Building

At 33 stories, this building is the 3rd tallest in Columbus, and the tallest participating building in Ohio Lights Out.
