Saturday is “Global Big Day” for Birders!

Participate and monitor the results of the Global Birding Day live on Saturday (Yellow-crowned Night Heron photo by Paul Konrad).
A Black-crowned Night Heron is featured on the Global Birding Day logo.

Join the excitement of the Global Big Day this Saturday, May 8th as birders from across the United States and Canada join the annual birding celebration that unites birders around the world as they identify and count all the birds they see in the field or at home – or both. As you participate and during the days thereafter, you can watch the bird counts add up in each country’s lists of species and numbers. It’s especially fulfilling to know you are part of such an impressive event, simple as it is on a personal level, but culminating in a worldwide citizen science project.

Participating does not require a lot of time – only as much time as you wish to devote. And you can contribute at different times of the day, from the same location, or from different locales, as you wish. Every bird counts – as long as you identify and count it, and enter your bird list(s) on eBird. Participating is easy, and you can learn how to enjoy this year’s Global Big Day of birding at https://ebird.org/news/global-big-day-8-may-2021

Last year, more birders participated in the Global Big Day than ever before: 52,249 birders from 175 countries found a total of 6,538 different species and submitted a staggering 125,626 checklists on eBird, setting a new world record for a single day of birding.

You can review last year’s results until Friday night at https://ebird.org/globalbigday and when the web page goes live you can watch and monitor all the information being added to the 2021 Global Big Day count Saturday and thereafter.
