Many birders consider one or more National Wildlife Refuges to be among their favorite birding destinations, and with more than 570 refuges in our National Wildlife Refuge System there is at least one in every state. The Refuge System can be counted among the greatest conservation stories ever told for birds and other wildlife, plants, water systems – and people. Starting this Saturday, October 10th thru October 17th, it is officially National Wildlife Refuge Week and it's prime time to celebrate America's national wildlife refuges and their vital roles in conservation, recreation, and community support.

It's also a great week to visit your favorite refuge, the closest refuge, or even a new national wildlife refuge with your binoculars, field guide, and camera. (Our editor started his refuge visits early with recent visits to refuges in 3 states: Long Lake Refuge in North Dakota, Tamarack Refuge in Minnesota, and Sand Lake Refuge in South Dakota.) Do you have a refuge in mind to visit? To start with, this year Saturday October 10th has been designated Urban Wildlife Conservation Day to honor the 101 national wildlife refuges located in or near cities.

While most refuges have a free entry admission, Sunday October 11th is a Free admission day at any fee‑charging refuges.
