Join hawk counter Josh Haas as he shares an overview about how to identify raptors in flight, and especially how Josh's video clips can help you learn to identify raptors in flight. Josh will show clips from his movie Hawks on the Wing to illustrate his innovative way to learn how to identify raptors in flight. The program features side-by-side videos of raptors in flight, which makes mastering the technique faster and easier.
Raptors in flight bring a sense of wonder to birders, but identifying distant birds can be a struggle, especially when back-lighting conditions don't show colors or markings. Flight ID is the standard for identifying migratory raptors at a distance, however books can only take the topic so far. After spending 7 fall seasons working at the Detroit River Hawk Watch as a counter, Josh Haas honed his skills and developed an interest in teaching visitors his unique ways of identifying the different species. This, combined with his experience in bird photography and videography took his teaching methods to a new level. That's when he created his movie Hawks on the Wing, with the goal of making raptor identification accessible to everyone through the use of videos with audio commentary.
This interesting program is presented by the Hawk Migration Association, Free of charge, but advance registration is required at Meeting Registration - Zoom.
