
A total of 81 teams of birders competed in the World Series of Birding, the biggest 24-hour birdathon event, with was held May 9th. In the Statewide category, the Mega team won first place by finding 211 species of birds by sight or by hearing within the state of New Jersey. Followed closely by the MOS Goodfellas with 207 species, the Thousand Birds team ranked third with 179 species. Awards were also given for teams competing within Cape May County, in a Limited Geographic Area, within Cape May Island, and in the Big Stay category.
The Youth Teams were well represented with 13 teams competing in 3 categories – Elementary, Middle School, and High School. There was also a New Jersey Audubon Ambassadors category along with 2 Carbon Free categories in which birding teams competed. Initiated in 1984, the World Series of Birding (WSB) is the biggest competitive day of birding, created to emphasizes the habitat needs of migrating birds along with a chance for birders to test and use their birding skills to raise money for great conservation projects. The WSB generates hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for many worthy conservation organizations, and it provides an enjoyable forum for interactions between birders, conservation organization representatives, and businesses in the birding market – all while focusing national attention on the challenge and adventure of birding – and it's Great Fun!
Hosted annually by New Jersey Audubon, the World Series of Birding takes place in the state of New Jersey, and centers at the southern tip of the state in the birding hotspot of Cape May.
