The Migratory Bird Conservation Commission on April 28 approved approved expenditures of $8.8 million from the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to conserve 16,044 acres for nine national wildlife refuges, through fee-title land acquisitions and lease renewals, with funds raised largely through the sale of Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps (Duck Stamps).

The proposed bill (H.R. 5069) would amend the Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp Act of 1934 to increase the price of the stamps from $15 to $25 and also require that the extra $10 go to conservation easement purchases.

The Friends of the Migratory Bird/Duck Stamp remind us that with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's signing of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act in March 1934, funds from stamp sales would be deposited in a special treasury account, the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund. In the first year, 635,000 stamps were sold at $1 apiece.

The National Wildlife Refuge Association reminds us that although it is produced by the U.S. Postal Service, the Duck Stamp isn't actually a stamp at all, it's a federal license required for hunting migratory waterfowl that also provides free entrance into any national wildlife refuge.
