The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation released its grant slate for this year's Monarch Butterfly Conservation Fund, awarding 23 grants for $3.7 million with an additional $5.8 in matching contributions, generating more than $9 million for conservation.

Without planting milkweed on agricultural lands in the Midwestern United States, monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) populations are unlikely to reach recovery targets, according to a recent analysis published in Environmental Research Letters.

Citizen scientists are invited to join biologists on the area the week of October 2 as they tag individual butterflies and learn more about their long-distance migration at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area.
