Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins and Purple Finches may be more common at feeders in southern Canada, the northern United States and even further south this winter due to poor natural seed crops. That’s the prediction from Ron Pittaway, who studies natural seed crops and the impact they have on finches. When natural seed crops are low, birders can expect an “irruption” of northern finches into more southern climes.
Blue Jays may also be more abundant than normal and Red-breasted Nuthatches could show up in bigger numbers at feeders. Nyjer seed and black-oil sunflower seeds are favorites for finches and suet will attract nuthatches.
