American Bird Conservancy: Migratory Bird Treaty Act Centennial Worth Celebrating

Great Egret

Passed in the nick of time, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act helped restore populations of many birds, ranging from egrets and herons to waterfowl and shorebirds. The original Actimplemented the 1916 treaty between the United States and Canada that was intended to ensure the preservation of migratory bird species.

Although this federal legislation has helped protect birds from numerous challenges during the past 100 years, it is now threatened by the current administration’s move to weaken the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, reversing decades of government policy and practice. In response, a coalition of more than 500 conservation groups has called on Congress to defend the Act during its centennial year.
