Purple Martin Workshop and Seminar in Kalona, Iowa

A workshop/seminar on attracting purple Martins will be held March 28, at 9 a.m. at the CAM Iowa Clothing Center 1005 Nutmeg Ave., north east of Kalona.

Morning speakers include Dave Irvin, of Iowa City, president of the East Central Iowa Beekeepers Association, will talk on "Beekeeping for Beginners." Everything you'll need to know about how to get started in this fascinating hobby.

Nationally recognized photographers and naturalists, Linda and Robert Scarth, of Cedar Rapids, will speak on "Restore It and They Will Come." They will showcase their photo-documentation of the first nesting chimney swifts to return to the 100-year-old Althea R. Sherman Chimney Swifts' Tower.

Larry Dobson, of Raymore, Mo., vice-president of the Missouri Bluebird Society and an award-winning bluebird photographer, will speak on "The Resurgence of the Eastern Bluebird."

The afternoon Martin program will feature Tim Millard, of Lockridge, speaking on "Mentoring Purple Martins." Millard is one of Iowa's most successful Martin landlords. He is constantly working to improve and protect his colony, and has helped many others get started, as well.

A panel of experts will then answer questions, followed by door prizes and an auction.

A well-maintained Martin colony brings joy to any neighborhood. Establishing a new colony is now a realistic possibility for many people. Anyone wanting to start or re-establish a purple Martin colony, or in need of assistance in maintaining a colony, will benefit from attending this program.

There is a $2 registration fee (ages 10 and under free). Lunch will be available at the site.
