Raptors of Mexico and Central America

A book that many birders and ornithologists intently welcome, Raptors of Mexico and Central America provides a wealth of information in its life history and identification descriptions, along with all-important illustrations and photographs from in the field. Look into the eyes and lives of tropical birds of prey, including the dramatic Crested and Harpy Eagles, Bat Falcons, White Hawks, Ornate Hawk Eagles, Tiny Hawks, Laughing Falcons – 69 species in all. To have such a broad treatment of Middle American raptors in one volume is a true breakthrough.

Although the focus is clearly south of the border from Mexico to Panama, Raptors of Mexico and Central America includes many species found in North American and South America field guides, which adds to our understanding of many widespread species. This book combines the work of a great team – William Clark, who stands out as one of the world’s leading raptor authorities, with John Schmitt, one of the best raptor artists and a top raptor biologist in his own right.

The 32 color plates are filled with John’s beautiful and helpful illustrations, and Bill’s field expertise and identification prowess provide a wealth of information combined with hundreds of color photographs from Clark and other photographers. William Clark also describes species’ behavior, prey preferences, hunting methods, and calls – plus a species range map in the Mexico to Panama region is provided. If you are headed for birding sites south of the border, if you are a raptor fan, or if you enjoy broadening your birding horizons by getting lost in a book, you will enjoy this Princeton University Press publication.
