Become an 'Owl Detective' at Winona Bird Club

"Owl Detectives"
Winona Bird Club (AKA Hiawatha Valley Audubon Society)
Senior Friendship Center, 251 Main Street, Winona
Wednesday, October 4, 2017, @ 7:00 PM
Presenters: Jo Severson and Ruby the Great Horned Owl from the International Owl Center, Houston MN

Calling all nature sleuths, young and old! You're invited to become an "Owl Detective" at the Winona Bird Club's monthly program, 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 4th, at the Senior Friendship Center, 251 Main Street, Winona.

Did you know that screech-owls don't screech? Do you know which owl cooks for you-all and which one sounds like a truck backing up? Explore the wild and wacky sounds made by our local owls as you learn to identify them by sound, shape, size and silhouette in this interactive PowerPoint presentation. Ruby the Great Horned Owl will be on hand to represent her species in person, along with Jo Severson from the International Owl Center in Houston, MN.

The International Owl Center is the only all-owl education center in the United States. This non-profit opened in 2015 as an outgrowth of the success of the International Festival of Owls, which began in Houston in 2003. The Center currently has nine live owls including seven Great Horned Owls (as part of their vocal research on the species), an American Barn Owl, and a Eurasian Eagle Owl (one of the largest owls in the world). The Owl Center's mission is to make the world a better place for owls, which they do by educating people about what they personally can do to live an owl-friendly life.

  • Program starts promptly at 7:00 PM and runs 45-60 minutes, followed by a brief business meeting, coffee and treats.
  • All Winona Bird Club/Hiawatha Valley Audubon programs are free and open to the public, and new members are always welcome!
