The Cornell Lab of Ornithology presented George Archibald with its highest honor, the Arthur A. Allen Award, to celebrate Archibald’s work on the conservation of the world’s 15 cranes, working for nearly five decades as co-founder, director, and now senior conservationist with the International Crane Foundation. “For a generation of ardent conservationists, George has represented one of the most dedicated, passionate, inspiring, focused, tireless, and inclusive practitioners any of us has ever met,” said Cornell Lab Director John Fitzpatrick during the ceremony.

The International Crane Foundation (ICF) works in more than 50 countries to preserve habitat, educate communities, and advocate for policy changes in areas where cranes need protection. In addition to his continuing work with the International Crane Foundation, Dr. Archibald leads the World Conservation Union commission on crane survival, and he is one of the great international diplomats among ornithologists and a willing teacher of everyone interested in cranes. George also advanced the captive breeding and reintroduction program for all 15 species of cranes at ICF headquarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin, where more than 25,000 visitors are introduced to the world’s cranes annually.

The Arthur A. Allen Award honors those who have made significant contributions to ornithology, while making the science of birds accessible to the public. Established in 1967, past winners of the Arthur A. Allen Award include Roger Tory Peterson, Alexander Wetmore, Tom Cade, Robert Ridgely, Victor Emanuel, and Linda Macaulay.
