Celebrate IMBD in Wisconsin May 21

Join West Wisconsin Land Trust in partnership with the City of Superior, the Wisconsin Stopover Initiative, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Camp Amnicon in celebration of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) on Sunday, May 21, 2017. This year's IMBD theme, helping birds along the way, recognizes the importance of "stopover sites" – the places and habitats where migratory birds stop to rest and refuel as they journey between non-breeding and breeding sites.

We are delighted to have Bill Volkert join us as we explore 3 different migratory bird stopover habitats on the shores of Lake Superior. Bill is naturalist and wildlife educator, having worked for WDNR for 27 years at the Horicon Marsh. He is a frequent guest on the Larry Meiller Show on WI Public TV where he shares his knowledge and passion for migratory bird travels across the globe. Bill will be joined by Kim Grveles, Avian Ecologist, Natural Heritage Conservation, WDNR, who will help us realize the incredible feat of migration as these birds reach the shore of Lake Superior after over 2000 miles of travel from their winter homes in central America.

Expect to see a mix of songbirds including warblers, vireos, flycatchers, a variety of sandpipers, hawks, loons, cormorants and shorebirds. Gain an appreciation of stopover habitat vs. breeding habitat along this wild shoreline.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience migratory birds stopping over at three of Superior's top sites! Space on the tour bus is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot early by phoning Superior Parks and Recreation at 715-395-7270. A $15 registration fee will be charged and includes the bus, guided tours, and lunch.
