Raptor Migration Observer, Bozeman, Mont.

Raptor Migration Observer needed to conduct the 24th consecutive count season for the Bridger Mountain Raptor Migration Monitoring Project, near Bozeman, Montana. Project runs September 1 - November 5, 2014. This is a volunteer position with a daily per diem rate of $40-45, depending on experience.

Observers must have excellent eyesight, be in good physical condition (for daily hiking of 2.5 miles each way to observation point involving a 2200-ft. elevation gain), be willing to endure long hours in the field with variable weather (especially cold temperatures and strong winds), be able to work well as a team member with other experienced observers, and most importantly, have demonstrated outstanding raptor-in-flight identification skills. Observers will work in teams of two to conduct daily, standardized (8 hours/day) counts of the migration. Weather permitting, observers will generally work 6 days per week, with additional observer support provided by qualified local volunteers. Camping on the ridge is optional, with free local housing (shared cabin) provided in the vicinity. Observers must provide their own high-quality binoculars.
