Celebrate 'Maygration' in Cape May

New Jersey Audubon invites all to participate in the month long
Cape MAYgration Spring Migration events calendar

New Jersey Audubon's 'Cape MAYgration': A Month-Long Migration Celebration

Annual World Series of Birding - Saturday, May 10

Cape May, NJ - The month of May is Cape May County's most active spring month for bird migration. And when the birds get moving, so does the New Jersey Audubon (NJA) and the Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO).

The NJA and CMBO invite everyone to enjoy all that this mass May migration offers during the entire month of May, when they host bird walks, boat trips, workshops and fun celebrations all month long.

Whether a bird enthusiast, nature lover or someone who simply appreciates the great outdoors, Cape MAYgration is an opportunity to enjoy the month's endless activities at your own pace and according to your own schedule.

You choose the bird species or migration you'd like to participate in and learn more about, and it's likely that an event or activity has been planned around it - be it the glorious and colorful arrival of breeding songbirds to Belleplain; or the feast of the migrating shore birds on a billion horseshoe crab eggs on the Delaware Bayshore beaches.

Everyone near and far is invited to take part in one of the month's highlight events: The 31st Annual World Series of Birding on Saturday, May 10. More than 100 teams are expected to participate in this competitive 'Big Day' for birding and nature enthusiasts. Teams have up to 24 hours (from midnight to midnight) to count as many bird species as they can identify by sight or sound within the state of New Jersey. Each species seen or heard counts as one. NJA lays the ground work and gives participants, the playing field and rules to follow - and the rest is up to the teams.

In addition to the competition, this year, NJ Audubon is encouraging all New-Jerseyans to join in the event, tagged as 'Enjoy the Birds' Day. NJ Audubon is encouraging people to step outside on Saturday, May 10, Stop. Listen. Look and tweet about birds they see and post pictures to https://twitter.com/NJAudubon using the hashtag #njbirdwatching. Walk out your back door - how many birds can you see? Take a photo and post it on NJA's Facebook event page at www.facebook.com/njaudubon/events.

After the event, NJ Audubon staff will review the photo entries that were posted on their social media pages the day of the event. Outstanding photos - based on uniqueness, composition and effort, will be posted on the New Jersey Audubon website. The photographers of the top 10 bird photos will be awarded a complimentary NJ Audubon membership package. This package includes two 'Tickets to Discovery', each entitling the bearer and a guest to attend any regularly scheduled NJ Audubon walk or program offered by any of our centers or 'All Things Birds'.

Below is a list of all the events taking place in May during Cape MAYgration:
